Quartz Composer 3 Core Image Filter Niceness

The new Core Image filter in Quartz Composer 3.0 is loverly.
More specifically, the ability to combine more than one filter and use JavaScript to pass the input through them in turn is very handy. I can also now dispense with a load of Math patches by using JavaScript to scale and process the control inputs. I’ve even managed to apply a Core Image Crop filter to the result, all with just a few lines of code.

Using multiple Filter and Math patches a la QC 2.1.

Multiple filters

Combining the two filter functions and processing input splitters inside the new Core Image Filter patch, using the Edit Filter Function option.

Combined CIFilters

The only potential downside is that, with everything tucked away inside the one Patch, it becomes much less easy to trace the signal flow and see what’s going on at a glance.
It’s a trade off I’m happy to make though, for the sake of a tidier layout and less cable-spaghetti!

I’m going to try to resist the temptation to go back through all my old Compositions and retrofit them with this new feature…
