NVIDIA 2D Spotlight Effect

This is one I worked on ages ago, then forgot about. It’s a translation of an HLSL pixel shader from the NVIDIA shader library. It’s a 2D spotlight simulation. I’ve added control scaling and rolled it into a qcFX.

‘tb NVIDIA Spotlight.qtz’ in the box.net widget.

Interesting Error

I’ve been trying to get some kind of simple Depth-of-Field effect going using a depth-map and a CIFilter. It’s not working very well so far, but along the way, I got some nice effects:

SSAO Test

No time to explain, as I have to go to bed in a minute, but these are initial experiments based on this article on Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, a technique to simulate self-shadowing on 3D objects. I’ll write more next week.

It needs a lot of tweaking, but I’m quite pleased so far.

More info to follow.

More Velvetty GLSL

I keep trying different versions of this shader. This one is based on code I found here.

It’s probably not as convincing as the Velvet shader I worked on before, but has the advantage of being very simple.

Now There’s an Idea….

This is very cool. I’ve been a big fan of Flight404‘s work for a while now, and just spotted this on his Vimeo page. I won’t feel at all bad about blatantly copying it, because I got half way to doing it anyway, with my CubeIterator qcFX, which is included with the current VDMX beta.

I did several versions of the Iterator qcFX, using different primitives, including this one using nested cylinders. Most of the qcFX I did for VDMX are pretty old now. I really should revisit them, I think. I’m sure they need updating, and I’ve learnt a lot since then!

Superformula Offline Rendering

This is a really nice non-realtime rendering of a version of my Superformula Spreads QTZ, with added post-processing effects.

Great work George Toledo, and thanks for allowing me to post it here!

The offline rendering was done using Kineme’s excellent Quartz Crystal application, which opens up all kinds of possibilities for QC content-creation.
